jazz is something i have always considered to be an inspiration in my artwork. i wanted this book to capture the organic and improvised—yet extremely calculated—rhythm and syncopation of jazz. during this process, i listened to each artist while i worked throughout the entire process as another way to visualize the rhythmic qualities of jazz as a physical medium. i painted and illustrated every aspect of this book to have a more human and imperfect undertone. the variation in the hand-done type for the headings is unique for every letter, the placement resembling the melody being played by the illustration on each page. i used acrylic paint to achieve thick, moving strokes for the large letters and i used brush and ink to truly capture an improvised representation of the specific musician on each spread. the idea of creating a specific color for each musician’s spread was tied to the idea that not every piece of jazz is the same, creating variation in my spreads and between each artist.
