Jazz is something I have always considered to be an inspiration in my artwork. I wanted this book to capture the organic and improvised—yet extremely calculated—rhythm and syncopation of jazz. During this process, I listened to each artist while I worked throughout the entire process as another way to visualize the rhythmic qualities of jazz as a physical medium. I painted and illustrated every aspect of this book to have a more human and imperfect undertone. The variation in the hand-done type for the headings is unique for every letter, the placement resembling the melody being played by the illustration on each page. I used acrylic paint to achieve thick, moving strokes for the large letters and I used brush and ink to truly capture an improvised representation of the specific musician on each spread. the idea of creating a specific color for each musician’s spread was tied to the idea that not every piece of jazz is the same, creating variation in my spreads and between each artist.
